RAROA CHEETAH GROUP MYTHBUSTERS
MythBusters: CHEETAH GROUP: THURSDAY
Brief Description: Using our collective knowledge of the popular television programme Mythbusters we are going to explore these scientifically and mathematically
Today 28 March we tried out one of the mythbusters investigation.
MYTH: That when you drop a buttered piece of toast it always lands butter side down.
Here are some photos of us testing this myth>
Your Goal To create your own myth to bust. You and your group (maximum number of 3) will design and produce an 8-10 minute performance of your myth to be uploaded to the GATE blog.
Overall my goal for you is to prove or debunk an Urban myth, and then design and produce a Mythbusters episode to demonstrate your group’s answering the myth through statistical and scientific means.
There are a few things to keep in mind when doing this project:
- You cannot use a myth already tested on the Mythbusters show.
- Be creative with your myth. Focus on a relevant topic to members of our community.
- Your myth must be approved by Ms Sime, (and if possible DPE teachers if you need to use any of the DPE equipment)
- No tests and myths requiring flammability or explosives. will be approved.
- There must be actual science in your myth that can be explained to your audience.
- No animal cruelty.
- Your myth must be testable. Data collection is required for scientific and mathematical analysis.
- You must supply your own testing materials. I have a limited supply of safety materials.
- All group members must participate in your Mythbusters episode.
- Video and digital photos must be taken throughout projec
- Your video format must follow the same style as the Mythbusters show.
Content Area: Science, Mathematics (Statistics)
Inquiry Frame: You will use the Raroa Inquiry frame to focus your inquiry and to develop your plan.
Inspiration Starting Point: Check out episodes of Mythbusters from the Discovery channel: http://goo.gl/oMdmf
Estimated Time of Project: 4-6 Weeks
Suggested Materials:
- Materials for project (your myth will determine what your materials will be)
- The GATE blog
- Camera
- Internet

Please remember I will be at camp next week from Tuesday to Friday. Please make sure you have enough work to go on with. The Pythagoras class will be on Monday in block two.
CHALLENGE
Can you solve the following problem using a simultaneous equation?

CHALLENGE
Can you solve the following problem using a simultaneous equation?
Here is
a simple puzzle: If I double David’s age
and add it to Jena ’s age the result is fourteen
and if I add 7 to David’s age it is the same as three times Jena ’s age.
Find their ages. The information
in this puzzle can be written in two equations as follows:
2x + y = 14
x - 3y = -7
Remember you can choose to solve it using the elimination or substitution method.

WELCOME TO THIS YEAR'S PYTHAGORAS GROUP.
I am looking forward to working with such an amazing group of students. On the good news front, it was great to see how many ex Raroa Gate students who sat NCEA level one in year 10, achieved excellence passes. Congratulations to Sam, William, Victoria, Jason, William Li, and anyone else I have missed. This year we are going to do an introduction to Calculus. As always we will check first to make sure we plug any gaps that you may have at your year level before beginning extension work. We will do this by examining your base line data IKAN, strategies and PAT assessments. Your teachers will also give me feedback.
To get you started I would like you to visit the KHAN academy linkKHAN ACADEMY and check your understanding of how to recognise linear, quadratic and exponential functions.
We will be going over this in class so don't worry if you don't understand or for some of you have forgotten this.
Thanks
Ms Sime

RAROA NORMAL INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL - CHEETAH and PYTHAGORAS 2014
Welcome to the Raroa Normal Intermediate School GATE - Cheetah group 2014 blog. Through out the year we will share with you our thoughts, ideas, discoveries and passion interests.
We are amazing group of Gifted Students. We know so much yet because we are infinitely curious and passionate we also know so little.
Our choice of name "Cheetah's comes from an article entitled "Is is a Cheetah?' by Stephanie Tolan . Once you have read this article you will gain a better understanding of who we are and how we think.
